Load Sensor

Today, load sensors are an important measurement tool widely used in industrial and commercial applications. Load sensors are precision devices used to accurately measure the weight of a load.

What is a Load Sensor?

A load sensor is a device used to accurately measure the weight of a load. Load sensors are also often referred to as a load cell. A load cell is a device used to sense load and typically consists of a metal structure. When a load is applied to the load cell, deformation occurs and this deformation causes a change in the resistance of the sensor. This change can then be measured as a signal.

How Do Load Sensors Work?

Load sensors work through load cells . A load cell is a structure that deforms when a load is applied. This deformation causes the resistance in the load cell to change, and this change can be read as a signal. Load sensors typically use a bridge circuit. The bridge circuit measures the changing resistance in the load cell and generates a signal. This signal is then amplified by the amplifier and made more easily processable. Finally, this signal is received by a data acquisition device or processor to obtain weight information.

Where Are Load Sensors Used?

The load cell is used in many industrial and commercial applications. For example, load sensors are used to weigh large-scale loads such as trucks, train cars, forklifts, cranes, pallet trucks, etc. Additionally, load sensors are used in industrial weighing systems, laboratory weighing devices, and other measurement applications.

Load Sensor Selection Criteria

There are many factors to consider when choosing a load sensor. Some of these are:

Carrying Capacity:

The carrying capacity of the load sensor must exceed the weight to be measured. The load cell must have a carrying capacity of 30% to 50% of the load.

Sensitivity:

Sensitivity is the ability of the load sensor to make accurate measurements. Sensitivity is expressed as % of full scale (FS) of the load applied to the load sensor. Generally, sensitivity for load sensors varies between 0.1% and 0.5%.

Resolution:

Resolution is the minimum measurement value of the load sensor. When selecting the load sensor, attention should be paid to the minimum resolution of the measurement range.

Dimension and Weight:

The size and weight of the load sensor must be suitable for the application area. The size and weight of the load sensor are also important in terms of ease of installation and portability.

Operating Temperature:

The temperature of the environment where the load sensor will be used is a factor that should be taken into consideration when choosing a load sensor. The operating temperature of the load sensor must comply with the requirements of the application area.

Installation:

The load sensor must be installed correctly. The mounting location should be selected according to the direction in which the load will be applied and the dimensions of the sensor. The mounting location may affect the sensitivity and accuracy of the load sensor.

Environmental Conditions:

The load sensor must be resistant to the environmental conditions in the application area. Moisture, dust, vibration and shock can affect the performance of the load sensor.

Reliability:

The load sensor must provide long-lasting and reliable performance. In accordance with the requirements of the application area, attention should be paid to the quality and durability of the load sensor.

Load Sensor Applications

Load sensors are used in many different applications. Some of these include:

Industrial weighing systems:

Load cells are a key component of industrial weighing systems. These systems are often highly accurate and can be customized for many different industrial applications.

Automotive testing equipment:

Load cells are used in vehicle testing equipment. It is specifically used to measure the height of the chassis or body of a vehicle.

Construction and engineering:

Load cells can be used in a variety of construction and engineering applications. For example, they can be used to measure the bearing capacity of a beam or bridge.

Medical applications:

Load cells are also used in medical applications. For example, many medical devices allow specific forces or pressures to be measured using load cells.

Marine and offshore:

Load cells are also commonly used in the marine and offshore industries. For example, they can be used to measure loadings or displacements on ships.
